The class is also suitable for students in social work, education, nursing and psychology. Key words: Attachment pathology hazards developmental stage Rites of passage mental health adolescence moral prevention intervention consequences executive functioning punishment resilience Supplies needed: poster paper post its colored pencils markers tape Optional: power point or other media to project images of: cradle boards, swaddled babies parents with baby happy teens with parent/caregiver anything that positively depicts adolescent stage of development Implementation: This class was developed as a stand alone class and may compliment a human behavior unit on adolescence in social work. The 8 hour class may also include research and broken into two separate days/times, ideally into 2 hour segments. An opportunity between part 1 and 2 for class members to research adolescent population and what the issues the group faces. Some research ideas include policy evaluation of: aging out of foster care, abstinence only and sex education, drug prevention and war on drugs, dating violence, bullying and suicides, criminalization and medicalization of mental illness are presently in the news. Warning: class discussion may lead class members to discuss intimate details of their past that may require a discussion about privacy, confidentiality. Be prepared to have list of possible referrals to outside counseling sources. A debriefing may be offered at the end of each session for the entire class. Part 1 Group exercises: As an introduction, each member of the class introduces themselves through writing, poetry, drawing, coloring, or song. Short Lecture: Overview of attachment theory Discussion Questions: Discuss cradle boards and what its function and meaning might be in Indian communities What were some of the benefits and risks of the cradle board This discussion should lead to other ways of child care during infancy Segue into how good and bad attachment affect adolescents Break Recap of earlier exercise and discussion Small Group Activity Students share experiences with encounters of their first. . . as a teenager through role play or dialogue written by the group members. Should depict a decision or action that was pivotal and made a difference. Discussion Questions: Refer back to the case study, what were some actions and decisions that made a difference and by whom what hazards did you run into or by pass how were these hazards prevented or dealt with Discuss punishments for teens deemed as delinquents by parents/caregivers, by outside systems Define the adolescent population in your community, i.e homeless, foster care. . . . Short Lecture: Brain development and adolescence Small Group Activity In small groups of 3-4 list and provide rationale of programs and or policies that target adolescent population to deter delinquency or other side effects of adolescence List and discuss types of evaluation these policies and programs undergo to determine efficacy Part 2 Ask each student to greet in their own way their fellow class members Overview of part 1 Short Lecture: Identity formation and rites of passage Discussion Questions How do people develop an identity this includes sexual orientation, set of values and ideals, vocational direction-knowing strengths and weaknesses, achievements How can adults in teens lives influence positive peer relations What ways can decision making skills be infused Ways to help teens take charge of their lives What about communication? Small Group Activity Referring back to the case study, each group chooses a part of the story that requires decision making Define the dilemma, list the stakeholders, determine 2-3 alternatives, play out possible outcomes Invite class members to share how they used or could have used decision making skills Report to the rest of the class using poster paper to depict findings Break Final Discussion Looking back- remember the first time you fell in love? What and who could have helped you best to make better decisions during that time in your life? How can you help: Class members will have plenty of suggestions.
